Homemade dog foods are great to add lots of fresh and quality nutrients to your dog’s diet.

But it can become expensive at times.

Dog food recipes with chicken are mostly inexpensive. But we have covered that earlier.

This list of dog food recipes are easy to make and will not cost too much.

I have a German Shepherd and a PitBull dog at home. My German Shepherd dog eats a wide range of food from commercial to the ones I listed here.

I only feed commercial dog foods to my Pitbull. Probably he likes that food more than the homemade ones.

So, without wasting time, let’s get down to the recipes.

How can you cut down costs in homemade dog food?

You can cut down costs and make affordable homemade dog foods if you follow this list:

  • Use chicken or turkey instead of beef. As meat is the main ingredient in dog foods, the choice of meat source can reduce or increase costs quite a lot.
  • Use additional carbohydrate sources like sweet potatoes or potatoes.
  • You can use white rice to cut the cost further. Brown rice can cost twice as much as the price of white rice.
  • Include a moderate amount of vegetables like carrots, beans, and spinach.
  • You can add meats and eggs to the commercial dog foods you have at home. So less commercial dog food means you save more!

Before you start making these recipes, get a good idea of the guidelines you need to follow to make dog food at home.

5. Cheap homemade dog food recipes.

Recipe 1: Cheap Meatball dog food recipe.

Do you want to give your dog a small treat?

You can try this meatball recipe.

This cheap homemade dog food is the best I could find. Last year when I made this for my furbaby, she absolutely loved it.

It’s simple to make and packed with proteins.

Ingredients you need for this recipe.

  • 2 lbs. Lean ground beef.
  • 4 large eggs.
  • 1 can of Kidney beans.
  • Just a little cinnamon.
  • 1 tsp. Sprig Rosemary.
  • Two pinches of garlic powder.
  • 3 shredded potatoes.
  • 2 shredded carrots.

  1. How to make it?

Use a food processor or blender to mix the kidney beans, eggs, rosemary, and spices.
Once this blends and becomes smooth, put in a big bowl and add the ground beef.
Add the shredded carrots and potatoes and mix them properly with your hands.
Now it’s time for a little baking session. Preheat the oven and put this in the oven in round shapes, so you get meatballs. 50-55 minutes will be appropriate for this.
    Serve it when cool.

Recipe 2: Delicious ground turkey and rice mix.

If you have fat dogs at home and want something that’s cheaper to make, this recipe should help.

It has a good mix of lean proteins, carbs, and veggies. You will get 10 cups of dog food and can last up to 5 days.

I used to feed this food to the fattest dog I had. It helped him to lose some pounds and at the same time kept him energetic throughout the day.

Ingredients you need for this recipe.

  • 1 lb. ground turkey (you can use chicken, but I think turkey is leaner than chicken meat)
  • Uncooked brown rice 2 cups
  • 1 tsp. Dried rosemary
  • Carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli altogether 16 ounces or less.

How to make it?

  • You need 6 cups of water for this. Put all the rice, turkey and rosemary together in a cooking pan.
  • Make sure to break the ground turkey and mix the ingredients together.
  • Boil this on high flame and put it on low flame. It will take 20 minutes for the food to cook properly.
  • Just 5 minutes before calling it off, add the vegetables.
  • Voila! Food is ready to serve!

Recipe 3: Beef and carrot recipe for growing puppies.

I love this recipe because it can essentially replace the commercial dog foods that you have. It’s best for growing puppies-packed with beef and egg proteins.

It’s cheap too because it will cost you around $20 or less. And will make you 40 servings!

Woah! Damn cheap I guess!

Ingredients you need for this recipe.

  • 4 lbs. Fresh beef.
  • 4 medium-sized eggs.
  • 4 carrots with skin.
  • 340g brown rice.

How to make it?

  • Add 1.25 liters of water and the beef pieces in a large saucepan. Let it boil and simmer for 20 minutes. The beef should be cooked properly at this stage.
  • When the beef is cooked, take off the meat parts and add rice and carrots to the water.
  • Cook the carrots and rice until you see them turning mushy.
  • Now it’s time to blend. First blend the carrot and rice mush. Set it aside. And then blend the beef with the eggs separately.
  • Mix everything together, and you will get big lumps of dog food.
  • Store in the refrigerator and serve when needed!

Recipe 4: Easy to make chicken stew for puppies.

This cheap puppy is absolutely delicious, and your puppy dog will just love it. The protein source is pure chicken, but you can use any meat you want.

This recipe will give you 32 cups of dog food and good enough to feed a puppy for 8 days.

Dog stews were popular back in the old days when owners didn’t really have a choice to buy dog foods. A glance at the dog food history should inspire you to cook more for your dogs!

Ingredients you need for this recipe.

  • 3 pounds of boneless chicken (you can skip the skin if you think your dog is already fat).
  • Brown rice 2 cups.
  • Diced tomatoes 56 ounces.
  • 2 tbs. Oregano or parsley.
  • 5 large sweet potatoes without skin.
  • 5 chopped carrots.
  • Half a cup of fish oil.
  • 1 tsp. Iodized saltwater.
  • 24 ounces of fresh or frozen peas.

How to make it?

  • Get a large stockpot and put all the ingredients in it. Pour water until everything is covered.
  • On high flame, bring it to a boil and then put it on low flame for 2 hours.
  • After two hours, you will see the mixture has reduced, and everything is fully cooked.
  • Serve when cool.

Recipe 5: Ground turkey and rice mush.

This is another turkey dog food recipe that I have for you. The ingredients are cheap, and half a cup per 20-25 pounds body weight of your dog will be enough to serve.

Ingredients you need for this recipe.

  • 1 tbs. Olive oil.
  • 4 lbs. Ground turkey.
  • 1 and a half cup of cooked dry brown rice.
  • 15 ounces of tomato sauce ( I prefer tomato sauce can).
  • Two boiled sweet potatoes.
  • 4 cups of fresh spinach.

How to make it?

  • Take a saucepan and add the olive oil.
  • Add the turkey and stir it for 20 minutes until light brown.
  • At this stage, add the cooked brown rice and mix together properly.
  • The food is almost done. Just add the tomato sauce, spinach, and sweet potatoes.
  • Mix everything well until you get an even mush.
